Full House: Ducatis in the Living Room

Peter Calles lives a surreal (yet real) version of a passing dream every collector has had: Bring all the collectibles inside.

Do you love motorcycles enough to share every waking moment with them? One man does.

From the outside it’s a typical American ranch-style house: single-story, three bedrooms and a double garage in a suburb of Washington, D.C. But walk inside and any similarities to a conventional house soon end.

The floors may be polished wood and the wall panelling complemented with sleek furniture, but that’s not what catches your eye. It’s the sight of nearly 30 motorcycles that have taken up residence in every room.

Where to begin

Let’s start in the kitchen. Sharing space with the coffee maker, refrigerator and dishwasher are a 1972 Ducati 750 GT, a 1957 Gilera 175 and a 1968 Triumph Bonneville 650.

Move along to the adjoining main room and you’ll get a quick history lesson in motorcycle exotica. Two Sixties-era MV Agustas, a 125 Centomila and a 150 Rapido Sport, share space with Seventies showpieces including a Hailwood Replica, 750 Sport and 900SS from Ducati. There is also a humble little Ducati Cucciolo that makes its own statement.

Have had my share of Ducati"s. !996 sscr with several up grades ( aluminum swing arm, remote reservoirs, adjustable forks, carbon fenders, Corbin seat}, 1982 MHR which I got from AUSTIN VINTAGE CYCLES, for $ 26,000 which needed a whole top end rebuild. Be careful dealing with them. And a 1978 DARMAH I bought from Berliner. What a surprise, it came with 40mm carbs and CONTI's in the crate ,all for $ 2900. What a deal. Put SS fender in the rear, Took rear off and molded tail lite into seat tail section, put an aircraft fuel cap in tank, removed side covers and tabs, put the 40;s and Conti pipes on, got IMOLA cams new for $300, took the electric start off and replaced it with an SS side cover and then with new graphics painted it in bright RED. Clean and very good looking. Then when I thought Ducati was going out of business I sold it . Guess who bought it .J GIELS from the J GIEL's band. Wish I still had it . Maybe there is one bike in your life that you wish you didn't give up. Love your collection something my wife couldn't get into. Have a great time with them all...…….. Henry Leal

Pete, it was great fun racing with you in BOTT. The lower fork leg of your race bike was a testament as to how much fun we had.

Super fine collection of Ducatis and Agustas. Curiously absent are a Manx or any other Norton which also has a fine racing heritage. Reno Leoni also worked with the Guzzi Le Mans which is also absent. Perhaps Mr. Calles is running out of room but in any case he should be congratulated on creating and maintaining such a collection.
